  • Breaking down desalination science and cost barriers
  • Tackling drought and climate change issues
  • Other breakthroughs on the way

Keynote Speaker:  Yoram Cohen, Ph.D. and Professor at UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science

Yoram Cohen has delivered a mobile water treatment technology that cuts the costs of getting the salt out of brackish groundwater and agricultural runoff. The system treats water at a cost of about $1.50 per 1,000 liters. Bottled water costs from $1 to $3 per liter. His Smart Integrated Membrane System eliminates the need for on-site maintenance crews and can be remotely controlled to cope with changing water quality conditions and reduce membrane fouling. The complete plant fits in a 40-foot cargo container that treats up to 25,000 gallons of water a day, enough to provide 50,000 people with clean, potable water for reuse in irrigation and household uses. The plant can be scaled up to provide water for entire cities, or scaled down to serve individual households anywhere in the world. It is now being tested in San Joaquin Valley California farmlands.

Yoram Cohen is a professor at UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.  Dr. Cohen received his B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, from the University of Toronto, and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. He has been on the Faculty of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UCLA since 1981 and on the Faculty of the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.  Dr. Cohen is the founder and Director of the Water Technology Research Center and the Center for Environmental Risk Reduction and a founding member of the UCLA/NSF Center for the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEIN.)
