• Why water quality is often more important than quantity.
• Energy-water-food nexus and virtual water.
• Sustainable practices for water management.
• What is our future water outlook?
Water scarcity and droughts are shaping new water strategies. California’s complex industry and agriculture environment has fostered discussions on how to tap new sources of water, recycling, new technology, reuse, cost of water management and fair use. One approach is to assign a value to the quality of water. This presentation will provide a framework of how water quality is often more important than quantity and how judicious management of water quality is important for industrial economies. We will also review the concepts of energy-water-food nexus and virtual water to identify more sustainable water use practices.
Dr. Bhattacharje holds an NRC Industrial Chair in Water Quality Management for Oil Sands at the University of Alberta, Canada and has completed water projects for Canadian Federal Government agencies, NSERC Canada, Canada Foundation for Innovation, National Research Council and Alberta Government agencies, Alberta Ingenuity, Alberta, NanoAlberta, Alberta Research Council. He has performed R&D and consulting in industrial water treatment for Suncor Energy, ConocoPhillips Canada, Statoil ASA, Statoil Canada, Syncrude Canada, Agilent, Trojan Technologies and Wave Control Systems. His research incudes over 75 journal articles, one book, four IPs, and over 200 conference presentations. He is Director of Canada’s Oil Sands and Coal Interfacial Engineering Facility.
